Speech Guidelines 2009
Updated Sep 16 2009, 05:07PM by Pam
1. Students must be currently enrolled in grades 6. 7 or 8.
2. You may enter only one category. All categories MUST use published materials with the
exception of OO, IMP, EXT.
3. Speak within the time limit
4. At the first meet, in a memorized category, if you have difficulty with your presentation, you
may ask the judge for a few moments to look at your speech, reflect, or to begin again.
5. Any complaints regarding judges or their performances should be immediately forwarded to
the site director by the coach.
6. Students should strive for anonymity. Avoid discussing schools or revealing names. Do not
wear t-shirts, sweaters, etc., that identify your school. Judges will not ask your name or
school.
7. Show respect for one another. Do not do anything during the course of a round to distract
a speaker. If you talk or distract the speaker, the judge has been instructed to score you
LAST in the round.
8. NEVER interrupt a speaker by entering or leaving the room during a speech. In addition, do
not loiter near doors or windows. Keep talking in the halls down to a whisper during the
rounds. NEVER be a disturbance for someone else.
9. You are representing your school. Behave accordingly. Be a good sport. Cheer for the
winners and comfort anyone who doesn't do well.
10. Be friendly to students from other schools. Part of the fun of being on the team is meeting
students from other schools.
11. NEVER chew gum at a meet!
12. Students, for health or economic reasons, may bring their own meal. (However, out of
respect for the efforts of those running concessions, teams are not to bring in any food
items.
13. Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation home after a meet.
14. To emphasize the academic nature of competitive speaking, the following dress code is
expected:
*Boys should wear dress shirt and dress pants or uniform pants (no cargoes or jeans
allowed.) All shirts must be tucked in. No t-shirts are to hang below the shirt. Ties and
dress shoes are optional.
*Girls should wear a dress, dress slacks or skirt with blouse and/or sweather. Skirts must
not be more than four inches above the knee (measured from a kneeling position). Blouses
and sweaters must be long enough so that no bare midriff shows even when raising arms.
15. Because a speakers actions during a presentation can be distracting to judges and to the
audience, a speaker should avoid doing anything that will create a negative impression or
detract from the importance of what is being said. (Examples: continuously purshing hair
back from face, swinging a hand or foot, chewing gum.)
16. All students will remain until the award ceremony is over. It is rude to leave during the
ceremony while others are being recognized.
17. Dress and behavior must comply with the Christian Code of Conduct found in the handbook
of each Catholic School.
18. All students must return to the cafeteria after they have completed each round. No
student is allowed to roam the halls of the host school.
19. Violation of rules and/or disrepectful behavior may result in having students suspened from
future speech meets.
20. Transfer Policy: Should a student transfer from on school to another during the speech
season, that student may compete on a speech team but may not use the material from the
former school.
21. Students may not use the same material more than one year even if they change
categories.
22. Students are not allowed to use props and are not permitted to dress in character.
23. Students must have competed in at least two meets in order to be eligible to participate in
the tournament.
